Zagreb pensioner donates her life savings to a kindergarten

Croatian Times

Zagreb pensioner Slavica Kanic Detelic has signed an agreement with the city government to donate her life savings of 50,000 Euros to a city kindergarten.

Detelic decided last year to donate her savings but refused to hand over the money before she learned when construction of the kindergarten in Mala Mlaka would begin.

After yesterday’s ceremonial start of construction work, Detelic signed the agreement with Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic, the daily Novi list has reported.

The Zagreb pensioner was injured in the Second World War and, because of that, couldn’t have children of her own. She came on the idea of donating money to the kindergarten when she saw how her neighbours and relatives needed to travel to far-away kindergartens because there wasn’t one nearby.

The Zagreb pensioner has been given the nickname "a granny with a big heart."
