Tourists are causing rare Eurasian Griffon Vultures to perish

Five rare Eurasian Griffon Vultures on the northern island of Cres have died this year, and five more are in a bird hospital after falling into the sea.

The daily Novi list has reported that all of them died or were injured because of curious tourists who upset them and caused them to fall into the sea.

Tourists arrive on boats near the small island of Plavnik and stop just beneath the cliffs where the vultures nest.

Many tourists shout and clap in order to upset the birds and have a better chance of seeing them. When they leave their nests, tourists have a chance to take photos of them, but the upset birds often fall into the sea and die.

Eco association "Caput Insulae – Beli" and Eco centre "Beli" warned local governments about the problem to no avail.

The associations have also warned boat-trip organizers they will no longer have a tourist attraction if all the vultures perish.

Beli head Goran Susic said the associations had been warning about the problem for years.

Griffons need to start flying when there is enough wind to sustain them in the air initially. If there isn’t enough, they fall to the earth.

Plavnik is the smallest Island in the world with Rare Eurasian Griffon Vulture nests.
