Library gets police help with overdue books

Library bosses have been drafted in police to help them reclaim overdue books.

Staff at the "Fran Galovic" library in Koprivnica say scores of books have suddenly been returned since they asked local cop Slaven Hizak to help them out, the "Jutarnji list" daily reported.

Hizak, who explained that he has simply turned up at people’s houses and politely asked them to return the books, said: "There is obviously some kind of barrier stopping people returning books. It is funny, in some cases they were even afraid of borrowing new books because they were afraid to return the old ones."

Library head Dijana Sabolovic-Krajina said: "Before we came up with this idea we had no clue whether those books were still even ‘alive’ and it turned out they were all in great shape regardless of the fact they had been borrowed years ago."
