Seafarers’ union of Croatia promotes maritime mediation

The seafarers’ union of Croatia and the Croatian Mediation Association are promoting maritime mediation instead of arbitration and lawsuits.

At their conference today (Fri), they advocated development of mediation as a conflict- resolution tool in maritime disputes.

Mediation includes mediators specialized in all fields of mediation and seeks to raise awareness of the contribution mediation can make to regional peace-building processes by helping resolve conflicts non-violently.

Seafarers and ship owners could save money during the financial crisis  because mediation costs less than lawsuits and is a faster way of solving disputes.

Croatian Mediation Association official Srdjan Simac noted that, unlike the USA, Croatia has barely started to use maritime-mediation procedures.

Seafarers’ union official Anton Malger said mediation could be used in cases such as non-payment of debt, injury or death at work.

Malger is calling on Croatian seafarers to ask the union for help in fights for their rights rather than to fight for them on their own.
