Croatia to pay Roma €77,500 for school segregation

Croatian Times

The European Court of Human Rights ruled yesterday (Tues) that Croatia had to pay 77,500 Euros to Roma students who were forced to attend segregated classes.

Fifteen former students who attended primary schools in Macinec and Podturen in the north of Croatia between 1996 and 2000 will receive 4,500 Euros each. The Croatian state will also have to cover the costs of court proceedings amounting to 10,000 Euros.

The former Roma students had previously taken their case to the district and the Croatian Constitutional courts, both of which had dismissed them. The defence had argued that segregated classrooms had been necessary because Roma needed additional instruction in the Croatian language, the Croatian daily Vecernji List has reported.

Lydia Gal from the European Roma Rights Center said that the condition of Roma in Croatia would be one of the factors the European Union would consider when deciding whether to admit Croatia. Croatia hopes to become an EU member state by 2012.

The European Court of Human Right had also previously ruled against the plaintiffs in 2008, and yesterday’s decision came after an appeal.
