Police arrested a five-member group from Rijeka, Zagreb and Varazdin for criminal acts of fraud on Friday.
The 53-year-old group leader from Rijeka and his accomplices had defrauded their victims of around 200,000 kunas (27,525 Euros) since August 2009.
Their victims were mostly suspected criminals.
They found them through the media and then called them and told them they could help them avoid going to prison but they needed to pay for the help.
The fraudsters also called people who were not under investigation and tried to blackmail them, saying they had documents the release of which would be very bad for them.
The fraudsters mostly presented themselves as former Supreme Court judges or officials of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).
Their victims included former postal-service bank CEO Josip Protega, Korcula Mayor
Mirko Duhovic and former Ambassador to France Marko Zaja, among others.

Police have found the body of a 49-year-old man in the hallway at the entrance to the parish house in Banici near the Damlatian city of Dubrovnik in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
