Three Croatian phys-whiz students have won prizes at the 41st International Physics Olympiad that took place from July 18 through 25 in Zagreb.
Two Croatian contestants won bronze medals and one honorary mention. Marko Jercic was the recipient of the honorary mention, while Ljudevit Palle and Borna Vukadinovic received bronze medals.
The young physicists seemed exhausted after the competition.
"We are tired, the competition was very strenuous as were the preparations for the Olympiad," they explained. But they soon admitted that a party after the competition was in part responsible for their fatigue.
Borna Vukadinovic won additional recognition as the best Croatian contestant out of the five that competed at the Olympiad. He hoped the prize would help him as he narrows down his university choices.
"This prize is an entrance to not only our, but also world universities. I have not yet decided what I will study, although I am interested in medicine," Borna told the Croatian daily Jutarnji List.
Some 374 high school students from 82 countries competed for prizes in various categories. The overall winner was Chinese contestant Yichao Yu who was best in several categories, including theory and most innovative problem solving.
