5,000 apartment up for sale to protected tenants
Croatian Times
Around 5,000 state-owned apartments will soon be up for sale to certain categories of tenants, including Croatian war veterans, policemen, active-duty military personnel and Serb refugees returned to Croatia.
The right to purchase one would apply to 1,010 Serb families who were apartment tenants in Zagreb, Rijeka, Osijek and other cities before the war in the early 1990s.
While the conditions of purchase are still being negotiated, it has been established that the new owners will not be able to sell their apartments for at least ten years.
Croatia has some 9,500 pending cases of Serb refugees with tenancy rights. Since that could burden the state budget for the construction of as many as 10,000 apartments, it is likely that the issue will be resolved through a donor conference in which the United States and European Commission may participate.
