Poacher caught at the border with 627 dead birds
Croatian Times
An Italian was caught at the Jasenovac border crossing with a van containing 627 dead birds of different species on Tuesday.
The birds – including quail, cormorants and Polish larks, among others - are believed to have been hunted unlawfully. Such hunting seems to have increased in recent years due to high demand in elite restaurants in the West, the daily Vecernji List has reported.
A portion of fowl can fetch up to 300 Euros in some Italian restaurants, whereas the price on the black market is around five Euros.
There have been 22 registered attempts to smuggle protected animal and plant species out of Croatia this year.
Punishment for such offences ranges from 1,370 to 137,000 Euros for judicial officials and from 412 to 13,700 Euros for private individuals.
