The number of people in treatment for amphetamine addiction doubled last year, the latest report from the National Strategy and Action Plan to Combat Drug abuse shows.
There were 7,733 addicts treated last year – 83 per cent men and 17 per cent women. The age group with the highest number of addictions was between 30 and 34 for men and 25 and 29 for women. Thirteen people younger than 14 were treated.
Experimenting with drugs usually starts at the age of 16, and the first heroin use around 20 years old. Heroin addiction is often replaced by cocaine addition, and then amphetamine addiction, the daily Vecernji List writes.
More than one third of those treated had held a stable job, every other person is married and every forth has children. Last year, 89 people died in Croatia from drug abuse, 54 of them from mainly a heroin overdose.

In the first three months of 2012, banks in Croatia record profits before tax of 1.29 billion kuna (170 million Euros), according to interim unaudited data for 32 banks in the country, it was announced on Wednesday by the Croatian National Bank (HNB).
Finance Ministry gets tough on evasive companies
At the request of creditors, Croatia's leading Financial Agency Fina has blocked around 38,000 companies and 26,000 tradesmen, because of more than 42 million kuna (5,3 million Euros) of outstanding liabilities, reports daily newspaper Vecernji list.
