Activist demand greater protection for women victims of violence

Campaigners from the Autonomous Women’s House have visited various state institutions in Zagreb in order to draw the government’s attention to the plight of women victims of violence.
As part of the action "Stop partner femicide," the women carried signs demanding greater protection to the State Attorney’s Office, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Justice and the Centre for Social Welfare.
"The state is the weakest link in the fight against violence against women. Although the laws are good, they are not implemented because the competent institutions do not cooperate well enough," Neva Tolle from the House said. The activists gathered in response to two murders in Croatia last month.
The activist say that 21 women were killed by their partners last year. According to the organisation’s statistics, one in ten women never reports physical abuse because of fear of a new attack, while every third woman has suffered some form of physical violence, the daily Vecernji List writes.

Houses of refuge should be put up and adequately publicised (if not already functional), where women who feel threatened would rush to find immediate help and protection. The protection that would be offered would have to be real snd lasting, with the full cooperation of the police and under the umbrella of adequate legislation. Such organisations may be nongovernmental, but the patronage of the highest authorities of the nation would be required.
