Several young Croatian scientists are behind a curious-looking satellite-replacement hypersphere (Hipersfera) that could help prevent fires, traffic jams, and illegal border crossings.
Bojan Pecnik and Robert Grilc of the company by the same name Hipersfera are the masterminds behind the helium-filled balloon that could take up as much as 100 kilograms of electronic equipment to 20,000 meters above the ground.
Hypersfere could replace satellates and only one covers an area of 2,500 square kilometers. It is not in an orbit however, and its servicing is less complicated and less expensive. It can also send real-time photographs.
It can be used above densely populated areas for surveying traffic or for scientific research over inaccessible terrains, and also for monitoring border crossings - amongst other things.
Pecnik said: "We are going for the commercialization of satellite imaging, because those photographs are very expensive and are bought mainly by world governments, in other words they are not yet commercially viable or interesting."
"We think we could be five times less expensive than satellite images and 30-some times less expensive than plane shots, with same quality," he added.

Banks in Croatia have once again posted huge profits. In the first three months of 2012, banks in Croatia record profits before tax of 1.29 billion kuna (170 million Euros), according to interim unaudited data for 32 banks in the country, it was announced on Wednesday by the Croatian National Bank (HNB).
Finance Ministry gets tough on evasive companies
At the request of creditors, Croatia's leading Financial Agency Fina has blocked around 38,000 companies and 26,000 tradesmen, because of more than 42 million kuna (5,3 million Euros) of outstanding liabilities, reports daily newspaper Vecernji list.
