Former treasurer of the majority party Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and chief of customs Mladen Barisic has been arrested yesterday (Wed) on suspicion of fraud.
Barisic is suspected of being part of an embezzlement scheme in which the PR company Fimi-Media is said to have cheated state firms and public institutions out of millions of Euro.
Together with former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Barisic was present at a meeting in which the two officials suggested that various public firms contract Fimi-Media for their PR needs.
Current PM Jadranka Kosor relieved Barisic of his duties as a treasurer when the problems with the company surfaced.
The police had arrested the owner of the firm Nevenka Jurak in August on suspicion of fraud involving fictitious accounts.
According to the data published so far, Fimi-Media was registered in 2001 when the company had only one employee and around 100,000 Euro of revenue. In eight years since its inception it grew to 11 employees and 120 million Euro of revenue.
The majority of that revenue came from state enterprises, the daily newspaper Jutarnji List writes.
