A stone from Roman emperor Diocletian´s tomb found

Croatian Times

Archaeologists in Croatia believe they have found a stone from the tomb of the late Roman emperor Diocletian.

Experts believe that a stone found inside the still existing 1700-years-old Diocletian's Palace belongs to the destroyed tomb of the emperor who was buried there.

The stone has been sent for further tests but its structure tells historians it was a part of the emperor's grave.

"This stone is called porfir and it was known the emperor's tomb was made out of it" said historian Ivan Sikavica speaking to Croatian news agency Hina.

Diocletian was the first Roman Emperor that retired. He left Rome and built his palace in Split, Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast. The building of the place actually heralded the founding of the city of Split, now the second biggest city in Croatia.
