Veterans go on hunger strike over The Hague verdict

Croatian Times

Five veterans of Croatia’s war of independence from former Yugoslavia (1991-1995) have started a hunger strike in protest to The Hague guilty verdicts for Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac.

Marijo Biber, Bozidar Mor, Ivan Velicki and Branimir Dedic began their strike yesterday afternoon on Zagreb’s main square, Trg Bana Jelacica. They were joined by another colleague, Zvonko, "the Tiger" this morning (Wed).

"We are on a hunger strike because of the shameful verdict for our generals, that is also a verdict for all Croatian peoples," said Velicki.

Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac were sentenced by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to 24 and 18 years in jail, respectively, for their role in military Operation Storm that reclaimed parts of Serb-held territory in Croatia.
