What do foreigners think when you say Croatia?

Croatian Times

Nice coast, beaches, sea, war and Yugoslavia are most frequent associations foreigners who have never visited Croatia have at the mention of the country’s name.

These are the results of a research on Croatia’s image abroad conducted as part of the tourism development strategy.

The survey included 2,574 people from Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and Spain.

A large part of the respondents or about 20 per cent – predominantly young people with lower education – said that they did not think of anything when Croatia was mentioned.

The Poles, Germans and Swedes are most likely to say "nice coast", "beaches" and "sea." Spaniards have a similar view, but they also would add "history and culture" to their associations. For the English and the Danish, mentioning Croatia brings images of war.
Few people see the country as a "new EU member" - more pronounced association is "ex Yugoslav state."

The leader of the strategy project Sinisa Horak says that the image a country has is an extremely important factor that decides whether someone will come for a visit or not. A better image means being able to sell a more expensive product, news website Tportal writes.

"Based on these results, it can be concluded that our image amongst the people who have never been to Croatia, and who are potentially our new guests, is relatively good," Horak said.

When I think of Croatia I always relate to the Adriatic Sea. This is the most beautiful, clean sea you could ever wish to see. The coastline and Islands are very beautiful. There is alot of nature to admire. If you go to somewhere like Plitvice Lakes you will understand. The food in particular the Scampi from the Kvarner region and the Prosut from coastal areas is very nice, and if you are in Ston try the oysters they are mouth watering . The people are friendly and welcoming but some do find the tourists a little too much. There is alot of history and mystery in Croatia.... Check it out for yourself.

I have been a multiple visitor to Croatia and mainly the island of Korcular. I love the atmosphere, culture and landscape, but I feel that the people can be unapproachable and not welcoming to visitors. I realise they sometimes must tire of people on the doorsteps. They must also realise that tourism brings money into their community.

I think in a new country with great prospects for the future. This is to learn from the mistakes of other European countries and the mistakes of the past. I would like to live in Croatia and help in the future.

Croatia is a very beautiful country to visit. It has many spectacular sightings, such as the parks, water falls, and mountains. I love the variety of foods, to eat there.
