Woman paid 5,000 kuna to literally just turn up for work

Croatian Times

A Croatian woman who has worked for over 30 years for the Student Service Centre (SC) in Zagreb, has been paid for the past five years for just turning up for work, writes Croatian daily newspaper Vecernji list. Nevenka Katalinic became "jobless" when she challenged the authorities at SC about work place bullying from superiors and irregularities in the workplace. "I worked 8 hours a day with only a 15 minute lunch break and without the right to even a toilet break. I suffered numerous insults from bosses and I simply could not put up with it any more," said Katalinic, who sent many letters, including to the Director of SC highlighting the issues. In November 2006, Katalinic was met on her arrival at work by security guards, who informed her that she was prohibited from entering the premises and was sacked. She fought the decision and when the board of SC found there to be insufficent grounds for her dismissal, Katalinic then had her pay cut by 15 per cent and transfered to a "made up" postion working in the centre's movie hall. From that day on five years ago, she regularly turns up for work, nobody asks for her, and nobody is interested in giving her work or discussing her situation. "I have written to the prime minister, minister of education and even the state inspector, but all my requests have been ignored, nobody wants to know about me," explained Katalinic.
