Burns: American government will do everything to abolish visas for Croats

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, speaking at a press conference after his meeting with Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic yesterday (Sun), said that the American government would do everything to abolish visas for Croatian citizens, since Croatia has "made significant progress and has become a model for other countries in the region."

"We understand the importance of this issue for Croatia. We share that commitment with you and we will try to get Croatia to join the group of countries which do not need visas. Croatia is already on that path and has made serious progress, there is perhaps only one outstanding issue remaining. The liberalisation of the visa regime is currently being debated by Congress. We need to wait. We will do everything in our power to get Croatia participating in the program," said Burns, who is in Zagreb.

Burns also rated Croatian American relations as "extremely powerful and intimate," and stressed that the U.S. highly appreciates the participation of the Croatian army in peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, as well as in UN operations. Burns supported the Croatian Government in implementing economic reforms, and stressed that he believes that they will improve conditions for investment in Croatia. Pusic stated that Burns's visit testifies the excellent relations between Croatia and the U.S., Croatian daily newspaper Novi list reported.
