Croatian Railways to cut 44 international lines

Croatian Times

In cost cutting measures, Croatian Railways have decided to cut 44 international passenger lines and only offer 12 destinations from 9 December this year, reports website Tportal.

Out of the current 56 international lines, only 46 are profitable, whilst the rest record losses of 38.6 million kuna (5.1 million Euros) annually, with an average of only 31 passengers on the trains, forcing Croatian railways to react by restructuring its international schedule.

Damir Grgic, director of passenger traffic, says that international travel is entirely based on market principles and that Croatian Railways can not and does not want to ignore the business' losses because it directly harms the Croatian taxpayers. Grgic also added that they would not cut rail lines to destinations in the region.
