Croatian mathematicians have once again demonstrated their excellent mathematical knowledge, and for the first time since Croatia has competed at the International Mathematical Olympiad, one of its representatives has won a gold medal, reports Vecernji list.
Domagoj Cevid (17), a third year student at the Zagreb gymnasium, has achieved the best result of a Croatian student in the last 20 years of competition when he picked up the gold medal. In the teams event Croatia also achieved its best result, finishing 25th out of 100 countries.
This year's International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Mar del Plata in Argentina and saw over 540 students from around the world participate. Along with Cevid's gold medal, Matija Bucic from Zagreb also picked up a silver medal.
The International Mathematical Olympiad is an annual six-problem, 42-point mathematical olympiad for pre-collegiate students and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads.
