Croatians sell 9 tons of gold in just four months

Croatian Times

Although Croatia has no gold mines, in just the first four months of 2012, more than 9 tons of gold was exported from Croatia, the same amount that was exported in the whole of 2011.

According to the Croatian Chamber of Commerce, the value of gold exports totalled 33.6 million Euros, a huge 142 times higher than the 234 thousand Euros which were imported.

The crisis has hit the Croatian economy so hard that people are turning to family jewels and getting cash out of all they can to survive the hard months.

Gold broking firm Gold Partner found itself among the top 20 companies in Croatia in 2011 for revenue growth. Last year it turned over 180 million kuna (25 million Euros), a massive 254 per cent more than in the previous year, reported daily newspaper Vecernji list.
