Giant cross to be built on Split's Marjan hill

The City Council of the Dalmatian city of Split has given the green light for a giant cross to be errected on top of the Marjan hill, reports daily newspaper 24sata.
Initially it was the idea of Mayor Zeljko Kerum to build the largest statue in the world of Jesus, even bigger than the 37 meter high statue in Rio de Janeiro. On Wednesday at the council meeting, it was decided by majority vote that a cross would be built on top of the hill.
The cross will be the same dimensions as the cross that was in the same place in 1900, but destroyed in 1917 by the Austro-Hungarian army. The large corss will measure 21.6 meters in height, and be 10.10 meters wide.
The city of Split will cover building, errecting and maintenance costs of the cross which will be built by 1 November 2012.
