Government prepares pedophiles register

The government yesterday began proceedures to introduce a new law on the legal consequences of convictions, criminal records and rehabilitation of convicted pedophiles, which will now see convicted pedophiles go onto a register, reports Croatian radiotelvision.
The government says that their goal is not to subject them to a public lynching, but to prevent them having contact with children up to 40 years after serving their sentence.
"The registry will not be published, but all relevant agencies will have access such as the State Attorney's Office, police, courts, and all institutions and bodies who in their work come into contact with children," explained the Minister of Justice Orsat Miljenic.
Research shows that up until 18-years-of age, one in every four girls and every fifth to sixth boy has been subjected to some form of sexual abuse. The amount of those which are children, no one really knows. Experts warn that the number of pedophiles is actually several times higher than what would be found on the registry.
