Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik's isolation problem from next July

Croatian Times

Getting to Dubrovnik could become a lot harder after Croatia joins the EU next year, according to a report in Italian national daily La Repubblica.

The city is cut off from the rest of the country by a small strip of land owned by Bosnia called the Neum region.

At the moment, getting to Dubrovnik means having to cross one of two border crossings which are open with minimal delays.

But with Bosnia not expected to join the EU until 2015 at the earliest (the country’s ethnic quarrels remain a worry for the EU, along with corruption and organised crime) getting through Neum to Dubrovnik could become fraught with bureaucratic delays, affecting tourism and trade to the city, argues the paper.

Croatia is set to join the EU on July 1, 2013.
