Identity theft turns man's life into nightmare

Croatian Times

A Croatian court kept a Macedonian man in a prison for 22 months - because they confused him with someone who had stolen his identity.

Tahir Tairi, 30, of ethnic Albanian origin was stopped by police trying to enter Croatia from Serbia at the Bajakovo border crossing on suspicion of drug smuggling.

Despite being innocent and not having any drugs on him, the court sentenced him to 15 years in jail for smuggling 26 kilograms of heroin.

It took 22 months before the court realised he was innocent and that the person they were hunting had stolen his identity and was already in a prison in Italy.

The real Tahir Tairi is expected to ask for compensation.
