Split´s Oktoberfest ended yesterday

Croatian Times

Split’s version of Germany’s Oktoberfest took place from last Friday to yesterday (Sun) at Bacvice beach.

The event was organised by the Split Croatian-German Association and held in a special Kaltenberg tent.

The Split day of beer was held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Split Croatian-German Association head Zoran Ribarovic told the Croatian Times he still remembered the day when the wall was built.

He added: "I had been working in Germany for a 25 years, and I remember that day when the Berlin wall was built. The German people were crying. How was its possible to divide a nation with a wall? So, when the wall fell, I finally saw happy people. We wanted to hold the Oktoberfest on the occasion the Berlin Wall’s fall because it was not just the start of German unification but also the announcement of Croatian independence. Our wish is to celebrate the Oktoberfest every year because Croatia and Germany are two friendly countries."

Ribarovic added the event would be held next year in September at the end of the summer tourism season.

Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, a member of the Bavarian Royal House of Wittelsbach and CEO of Kaltenberg brewery, attend this year’s Oktoberfest in Split.

He added: "It is great to see all these people enjoying the music, beer and dancing. I am very happy finally to attend the Oktoberfest in Split. If you ask about the impact of the financial crisis on the beer industry, I can only say that a good-quality product will always sell. Yes, this year was difficult, but people will never give up a good product."

Although the Split Oktoberfest ended yesterday, the Kaltenberg tent will remain open at Bacvice until the New Year as the site of many events.
