Famous Croatian conductor Vjekoslav Sutej died at the age of 58 at Zagreb’s "Rebro" hospital yesterday (Weds).
Sutej was musical director and principal conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and a professor of conducting at the Zagreb Academy of Music.
Sutej, born in Rijeka, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2008. He received medical treatment in Seattle last year and underwent an unsuccessful bone-marrow transplantation procedure. In September 2009, he underwent the same procedure again in Zagreb but died due to post-operative complications.
The treatment in Seattle was recommended to him by his good friend and business colleague Jose Carreras, who had leukaemia 20 years ago.
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor have sent letters of condolence to his family that said he would remain an important figure in Croatian musical culture.
Sutej conducted many concerts with some of the biggest names in music, such as Jose Carreras, Montserrat Caballe, Diana Ross, Andrea Rost, Ramón Vargas and Maria Guleghina.
From 1986 to 1990, Sutej was artistic director of the Hollybush festival in New Jersey, where he started his international career.
From 1990 to 1993, he was music director of "La Fenice" in Venice. From 1992 to 1997, he was music director of the "Houston Grand Opera", where he conducted 133 performances, including those of 19 new productions. He was a guest conductor in many opera houses worldwide.
In Spain, Sutej was a founding member of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra and its artistic director and principal conductor from 1990 to 1996.
Since 1994, Sutej was regularly invited to conduct at the Vienna state opera, where he conducted 136 performances. From 1992 to 1995, he also conducted the first four editions of the Christmas in Vienna concerts, recordings of which have sold more than two million copies.
As a guest conductor, he conducted orchestras in Italy, Japan, the United States, Germany, Russia, Hungary, Spain, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Mexico, the Czech Republic and France.
