A friar to take the homeless to world soccer championships

Friar Juraj Vranic loves God and soccer, and he combines his passions daily to train a team of homeless men to become world soccer champions.
The next Homeless World Cup will take place in Brazil, and Friar Vranic’s team is hard at work. Eight men will compete, a different team from last year’s because the homeless street-soccer rules require that new players participate each year.
Vranic founded a homeless shelter two years ago at the church of Saint Romuald and All Saints in Rijeka on Croatia’s Istrian coast. In addition to soccer training, the shelter also provides job placements when possible.
The team’s participation in last year’s championships in Milan received a lot of attention that resulted in two of the players finding permanent jobs.
Vranic is a big Manchester United fan and considers Munich Bayern’s coach Louis van Gaal a good role model.
