Croatian mezzo soprano Renata Pokupic has thrilled British critics with her performance in the opera Tamerlano at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London.
Tamerlano by George Friedrich Händel was performed there from 5 to 20 March and sold 2,268 seats for each performance.
The director was Graham Vick, the conductor Ivor Bolton. Soloists included Christianne Stotijn (Tamerlano), Sara Mingardo (Andronico), Kurt Streit (Bazajet), Christine Schäfer (Asteria), Vito Priante (Leone) and Renata Pokupic (Irene).
Pokupic is the first Croatian singer to have performed at the Royal Opera House in the past few decades.
Before her, Milka Trnina, Zinka Kunc, Ruza Pospis Baldani and Ljiljana Molnar-Talajic had performed there.
"Croatian mezzo-soprano Renata Pokupic made a very spirited debut with the Royal Opera in the role of Irene and turned out to be a very pleasant surprise, displaying a warm, full-bodied and velvety timbre that was a genuine delight to listen to. Her Act II aria "Par che mi nasca in seno" was impressively stylish, with a very smooth legato line." Faye Courtney from Opera Britannia said.
"Fortunately, compensation was at hand in the form of Renata Pokupic's Irene – the evening's standout vocal performance. A master in both characterisation and projection, she was as foxily seductive as she was worldy-wise, despite being forced to share her most-glorious aria with a giant blue elephant on whose jerkily-moving back she was precariously perched." Alexandra Coghlan from MusicalCriticism.com added.
