Vesna Parun dies

The famous Croatian poet Vesna Parun died today (Mon) at the age of 88. She was in a medical rehabilitation clinic in Stubicke Toplice, north Croatia.

She suffered from thyroid gland cancer and had a weakened heart. In 2002 she had to go into hospital after a femur bone fracture.

Her stay in the special hospital was paid for by the City of Zagreb.

Hospital head, doctor Davor Gredicak said: "Everyone in the hospital will miss her. This is a very sad moment for all of us, because she was our legend".

Vesna Parun was born in Zlarin, Sibenik  in 1922. Since 1947 she worked as an artist, writing poetry, essays, criticisms and children's literature.

She was the first woman in Croatia who lived exclusively from literature and for literature.

She was also a painter and translator from several languages. Her verses were translated into many languages. She also won numerous major awards for her poetic work.
