The mayor of the Croatian island of Hvar has suggested naming one of the smaller nearby islands after the world’s most famous social networking site, Facebook.
Pjerino Bebic sent his idea to Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg and invited him to spend his summer vacation on Croatia’s Hvar, known as the sunniest island in the Adriatic.
"We will have more information when he answers, which we hope will be soon," Bebic said.
It is rumoured that if Zuckerberg approves the idea, the last island in the chain of Pakleni Otoci (Pakleni Islands), Veli Vodnjak, will get the new nickname. The island is a home to a light house, a symbol for connectivity, the daily 24 Sata writes.
Some 30 per cent of Croatians have a Facebook profile. The mayor and many of the islands residents hope that the unusual nickname will give the area more publicity and attract many new visitors.
Hvar often hosts many famous vacationers, including the Formula 1 owner Bernie Ecclestone and fashion designer Giorgio Armani.
