The Austrian capital Vienna has lodged itself in the travellers’ imagination as the city of architectural grandeur, history and music. It is a place that once formed the heart of an empire and the crossroads where its many distant parts met.
Today’s Vienna remains a meeting point for people from around the world and Maria Petrak’s project "Best of Vienna" collects them in a network that promotes the city’s distinct cultural mélange.
A recent exhibition of photography organised by Petrak gathered glimpses of the Austrian capital as seen through the lenses of once-strangers who have made Vienna in the meantime their temporary or permanent homes.
One of the featured photographers is Croatian-Mexican engineer Milenko Matosic, who says his mixed background lends him a unique perspective on the world.
"My family on my father's side has been involved in the last three worst wars in Europe – WWI, WWII and the 90s Balkan War. So we enjoy and value simple things in life, like a meal with all the family together."
"On my mom's side, I can say that all the joyfulness, amazing tastes, vivid colors and wonderful weather in Mexico have taught me that life is more than just the material world humans have created." His photographs try to capture those simple moments, he says.
And although kilometres apart, the two countries’ cultures are similar in many ways, says Matosic.
"When you travel to both countries you find people laughing in the street, shouting and seeming to enjoy life - being happy, even when a considerable portion of the population is living in poverty in Mexico."
Another photographer whose roots reach back into the former Yugoslav region is Mostar-born Drago Palavra (Bosnia and Herzegovina), who has lived in Vienna since 2006. His photograph of the city's well-known landmark Wiener Riesenrad or giant Ferris wheel was amongst the 35 finalist takes on Austria's capital captured by Austrians themselves, Americans, Spaniards, Germans, Iranians, Lebanese, Chinese and many other new Wieners.
Vienna is a cocktail of cultures and the desire to promote intercultural exchange lurks in the background of Petrak’s project. "For me there are no borders - we may speak different languages, but we all speak the language of humanity," says Petrak, herself from Serbia's Vojvodina region.
The winning photographs will be published in a 2012-2013 calendar and the proceeds of the calendar's sales will be donated to charity.
