Croatian movie premiers at New York Jewish Film Festival

Croatian movie "Lea and Darija" has received its American premiere as part of the New York Jewish Film Festival held from 11 until 26 January in the Big Apple.

The drama tells the story of Lea Deutsch, known as the Croatian Shirley Temple, and her friend and dancing partner Darija Gasteiger. The two talented and exuberant 13-year-old girls were great stars in Zagreb on the eve of World War II. They played to sold-out houses around Europe, were filmed by Pathé Paris and Berlin’s UFA and lived in the rarefied world of the 1930s Croatian National Theatre’s "Children’s Realm". The Nazi persecution of Jews and later, German nationals’ flight from communists, tests their friendship.

The director Branko Ivanda said he was very happy with the movie’s reception and that he was approached by a few distributors.

The director of the Festival Aviva Wintraub praised the film. "We are all touched by the story, but also amazed by Ivanda’s idea for the film. "Lea and Darija" is one of the best movies in this year’s selection," Weintraub said.

Lea died from hunger on her way to Auschwitz, while Darija, of German background, now lives in Innsbruck. She will attend the premiere in Zagreb on 29 January in the Croatian National Theatre (HNK) where she once performed with Lea, Ivanda said.
