Croatian skiing legend Janica Kostelic is among the 24 sport stars of the decade, according to Eurosport and Yahoo.
Janica, 27, has four Olympic gold medals, five world titles, four World Cups and has won races in all five Alpine disciplines. She quit the sport three and a half years ago.
Eurosport and Yahoo plan to open the next window on the calendar each day to reveal a sporting great of the last 10 years, and, on December 24, will name the star at the top of the Christmas tree.
Each athlete will be given a mark from one to 10 in five categories: her/his sporting ability, sporting success, popularity, marketability, and an X-Factor – intangibles.
Janic won 30 of 50 possible points, which put her in 22nd place. She is described as the decade's pre-eminent winter sports person who was inspirational and dominant in equal measure. Skiing's minority-sport status prevented her from finishing higher on the list.
Janica had the most points for sports ability and sports success.
