Velebit Information Centre opens in Zagreb

Croatian Times

Northern Velebit National Park opened a new Information Centre in Zagreb yesterday (Weds).

The centre opened on Tomislav square in the city centre on the occasion of International Day of Mountains, 11 December, and the 10th anniversary of Northern Velebit National Park.

The Park's natural and cultural offerings, as well as its exquisite bio-diversity and beauty, are presented at the centre in the form of photos, videos and exhibits.

Northern Velebit National Park covers 109 square kilometres on the northern part of Velebit mountain, the largest mountain in Croatia that is also a nature park.

The Croatian Park Public Institution is promoting a geological guide to the park by Ivo Velic and Josip Velic.

Institution head Milan Nekic said this year had been a success for Velebit, which had 16,000 visitors or around 20 per cent more than in 2008.

More than 60 per cent of the visitors participated in a special educational programme that Nekic considers to be very important.

The Park Public Institution has 17 full-time employees and an additional eight during the summer season.

Nekic said: "We will try to improve our services and to increase the amount of scientific research during the next two years because Velebit is practically unexplored. We are also planning to apply for EU funding for some projects."
