Croatia among Europe´s favourite holiday destinations

Croatian Times

All work and no play is not the way many Europeans see their near future.

A Eurobarometer survey published yesterday (Tues) in Brussels shows that 80 per cent of residents of 32 European countries will go on vacation this year, many of them to Croatia.

The survey found that while most Europeans would spend their holidays within the borders of their own countries, those willing (and financially able) to travel beyond them were most likely to head for Spain, France or Italy.

But Croatia remains among the top three destinations for Czechs, Hungarians, Austrians, Poles, Slovenes, Slovaks and Norwegians. Its Slovene neighbours consider it the number-one spot in which to spend holiday time.

Croatians seem to share their enthusiasm, for 78 per cent of them will stay in their homeland, with only five percent traveling to Spain and Italy.

Only 20 percent of 30,000 people surveyed said that they would not go anywhere this year, a significant decrease from last year’s 33 percent. Financial problems will be the main reason for ten per cent for not traveling, Croatian business portal Business.hr has said.

Thirty-seven per cent of people said their main motive for going on holiday was rest and recreation. The sun and the beach and visiting friends were two other motives.

Eurobarometer queried 30,000 people in 27 EU countries and five non-EU countries - Croatia, Norway, Turkey, Iceland and Macedonia.
